This brief sketch entails the creation of a publication (connoting a relationship to a standard book format) that would most likely include not only information graphics but text content including articles, quotes, opinions from credited industry persons and so on. The overall theme here would be more of a story format, taking the reader through the various areas and aspects about the global gaming community. Note that “story” does not entail the notion of an overall narrative to the piece that will be aimed to compose no matter what direction results.

What would a digital format look like. It would have to be flexible in order to accommodate the requirements of multiple visuals. This may result as a standardized button format website, but research into newer screen real estate technologies such as photosynth / deepzoom that allow for smooth seamless transitioning between a macro and micro viewpoint. This eliminates the need for buttons and thus might be a nice departure from standard web formats, especially in context of this project in providing something engaging for the viewer.

After reading the literature of Tufte the thought of utilizing every inch of real estate, whether paper or digital although in this case leaning towards the digital, is appealing. Playing around with dimensions proportional in connoting data values seem appealing also. As well, this plays on the ink to data relationship that Tufte speaks of. In that sense, simplicity would be the aim in this case to not overwhelm the viewer/reader with a complex or congested information graphic that proves to disconnect the viewer in the end, if by nothing else than sheer laziness to dissect such a piece.

Some sketches about the form of the concepts as stated within the research summary. These are the initial stages of searching for the best form fitting resolve. More exploration will be required in the next phase to better sort out the working from the not, or rather what will best lead to the working.

The concepts above do not directly tie into the 3 concepts as stated within the research summary. Rather this is 3 brief concept directions pertaining to the form pursuit to be taken after the fact of this phase… or from here-on-in.

Upon reading the standard Tufte source for information graphics I had purchased in prior years I noticed many key points indicated by the plethora of post it notes as seen in the photo.

Very briefly, some of these key points about “Graphical Excellence” are:
– show the data
– induce the viewer to think about the substance rather than about methodology, graphic design, the technology of graphic production, or something else
– avoid distorting what the data have to say
– present many numbers in a small place
– make large data sets coherent
– encourage the eye to compare different pieces of data
– reveal the data at several levels of detail, from a broad overview tot he fine structure
– serve a reasonably clear purpose: description, EXPLORATION (to be used later in my project as a method of attracting the viewer), tabulation, or decoration
– be closely integrated with the statistical and verbal descriptions of a data set.

This include such things, but is not limited to:
– eliminating chart junk
– finding the balanced data to ink ratio as described by tufte

These information graphics resources are in the form of videos. Some are animated 2D information graphics whereas otherwise are more defined towards expressing the data through the video context, that is more of a film format. Again, Hans Rosling makes an appearance. Vimeo also has well defined examples of information graphics in the form of video.

These are various interactive information graphics resources. Although there is a range I found some key examples to be quite useful in serving the purpose of this project. That would be the workings of Jer thorpe and Hans Rosling. As well I noticed that the photosynth, deep zoom software may serve the purpose of creating a macro to micro, zooming in and out, style of information graphics allow for the overall picture to zoom into well defined details, data supporting that is.

The links above are to a numerous account of 2D information graphics that I found searching online. The static 2D information graphics pose various examples of well defined use of information and graphical layout, utilizing the various types of graphs out there. That being said a lot of them still contain unnecessary elements, such as additional icons and pictograms that do not do much to represent the data. Yet these elements, in certain instances, define a visual aesthetic that speaks to the context of the information graphic within a cultural context.  2 key resources I found to contain many well defined examples for these 2D information graphics are:- good.is

Celebrating ‘Tennis for Two’ With A Video Game Extravaganza

Video gaming statistics can be sourced predominately online. Although publications do exist about the demographics and industry statistics most gaming information companies do place their information online, disregarding newzoo with it’s price tag. It only seems appropriate that these resources place the information online (even if by printable .pdf format) in order to be accessible not only to the global populous but at well to the form be suited to those of the industry… Or maybe I’m stretching things a bit too much, but that’s my excuse and I’m sticking too it. Nonetheless there were more resources available online, it seems to keep going and going, but the trick was to find something credible, or linking to something credible. Hence the list above.
